Kennewick: Slurpee Capital of the World

slurpeeBetcha didn’t know this: Kennewick is the Slurpee® Capital of the World.

It’s true: The 7-11 store at 3606 W. Clearwater Avenue has been the No. 1 seller of slurpees on earth for six of the past nine months. And they were the No. 1 slurpee seller in the U.S. in 2007.

The owner, Don Mariotto, tells the Herald that he’s starting a campaign to secure the No. 1 worldwide spot over a 12-month period. He’s giving away free t-shirts:

The first 300 people who buy a 40-ounce Slurpee from each of the six Tri-Cities stores gets a free T-shirt with the campaign logo on it.

The campaign is designed to promote all six stores because of new equipment at the other stores and continued growth of local Slurpee sales — the Tri-Cities ranks 23rd of 762 markets in the U.S.

Who knew that Slurpees were so popular in the Tri-Cities??!! Crazy stuff.

Anyway, if you want to visit the No. 1 Slurpee seller, here’s a Google map to their Kennewick store:

    Who knew? I knew! http://tinyurl.com/62kymh

  2. Jenn says:

This is partly not true. While Kennewick has had the busiest store in the world, it has not been crowned the slurpee capital of the world. This morning on the Winnipeg radio station hot 103, people were assured that Winnipeg has had more slurpee sales with 5 of its stores then Kennewicks’ 1store. There you go!

  3. Matt McGee says:

Thanks, Jenn. But it doesn’t seem fair to compare 5 stores vs. 1 store, does it? :-)

  4. Jenn says:

I guess not. But we winnipeggers have to defend our title !
It has now officially been confirmed that Winnipeg, for the 9th year in a row, has been crowned as the slurpee capital of the world, based on yearly sales. No need for a “Move over Manitoba” sign, just yet!( no offence to the store whatsoever) :)

  5. Prairiegrrl says:

Congrats Kennewick on your great run to become Slurpee Capital of the world…maybe next year you’ll beat Winnipeg.

CONGRATS TO WINNIPEG, MANITOBA CANADA ON WINNING THEIR 9TH SLURPEE TITLE.

    A BIG THANKS TO 7-11. OH THANK HEAVEN…FOR 7-11 ;)

  6. F! WINNIPEG says:

    KENNEWICK ALL DAY BABY

  7. Glen says:

This article is FALSE. Everyone knows that Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada is still the Slurpee Capital of the World. We have 5 stores alone that sell more Slurpees than the one in Kennewick!

    Nice try though! :)

  8. Glen says:

Matt, we’re not comparing 5 stores to 1 store. EACH of the 5 stores outsell the 1 one in Kennewick…

  9. godfrey says:

“Out of the top 10 stores, in terms of Slurpee cup sales in North America, eight of those 10 are from Manitoba,” 7-Eleven spokeswoman Sheila Calder

And the number one selling store is in Winnipeg located at Pembina hwy. and Killarney ave.

So the top store and overall top seller worldwide is winnipeg.

  10. Who’s the Slurpee Capital … Kennewick or Winnipeg? » Kennewick Real Estate Blog says:

[...] knew that an innocent blog post about Kennewick slurpees would bring out Winnipeg’s finest for what turned into a fairly heated argument about a super-cool drink? Seriously, it’s [...]

  11. Glen says:

We Winnipegers take this very seriously. We don’t want any false information going around. This “super-cool drink” seems to be as much as a big deal to Don Mariotto and the people of Kennewick, to be making such claims, so don’t be the pot calling the kettle black.

We just want to see the facts, and this article is not factual.

  15. Ryan says:

Just FYI.. Winnipeg,Canada is the official slurpee capital of the world.. This year in 2009 its the cities 10th consecutive title.

  16. Glen says:

WOO HOO! Go Winnipeg! 10 STRAIGHT YEARS!!!

  17. Dave Cood says:

Yeah….WINNIPEG IS THE SLURPEE CAPITAL BABY! 10 years running, and we ain’t stopping there.
Whoever wrote this is…how should I put this…blatantly INCORRECT!

  18. jerry says:

You know what they should do? Put in more stores. If we could have just 3 to winnipegs 5, we would dominate them!

p.s. if you haven’t figured it out yet, i live near the 7-11 in Kennewick :)

  19. Kelly Edwards says:

Yeah it’s not the official slurpee capital of the World. It was just the busiest.

  20. Winnipeger says:

Winnipeg, Manitoba is now slurpee capital of the world for 10 years in a row now, wiki it, im sipping on one right now, WERE NUMBER ONE

  21. Savannah the Happy Winnipeger says:

Winnipeg sells almost 200,000 slurpees a day.
    No one tops that.

  22. chris says:

rofl you Winnipeg people take this to seriously, you keep putting 5 stores against 1, not fair/cool. how about comparing your best store (1 store) against ours then we will see who sells the most

  23. Glen says:

Ummm…no chris. We have 5 stores that individually outsell your one store.

Too many sore losers in Kennewick.

  24. chris says:

if you say so Glen… still i think its cool that we got close….

  25. Brent says:

just check the 7-Eleven web site…they have stated that Winnipeg has held the Slurpee Capital title of the world for 10 years straight. it’s common knowledge!

A 7-Eleven (or Sev as everyone here calls it) store across Manitoba sell an average of 280 Slurpee drinks per day…PER DAY! so time that by the 74 sev’s in only winnipeg…thats 20,720 Slurpee’s Per Day!

In 2009, Calgary placed second for most slurpee’s sold(and it’s been like that for years now) and Detroit is third

and Winnipeg sold 20% MORE than Calgary…Thats a HUGE difference between first and second…so no…Kennewick is NOT the slurpee capital…not even close…nice try…

  26. kathy Fisher says:

I beg to differ the store located in Park Forest, Ill has got the most flavors a total of 14 barrels with no flavor repeating itself this allows us a large amount sales

  27. Glen says:

You can beg to differ all you like, but facts are facts. You can go based on an assumption, they have data on this…

    Go Winnipeg!

  28. Zach says:

Who knew Canadians had no life… I totally stumbled in here looking for a 7-11 in the Tri-Cities you all must have been trolling about for someone trying to take your title as diabetes capital of the world.

  29. Steve says:

Whatever you say Zach. Canadians didn’t start this debate…the Americans did, and falsely I might add. We just like to prove you wrong. :)

  30. fred says:

just confirmed today July 8, 2010, Winnipeg has once AGAIN been crowned Slurpee capital of the world. Eleven straight years!

  31. Juice says:

Who cares about Winnipoop…The Kennewick store is closer and serves the same drink- nuff said. Get over it, Canada.
