School starts tomorrow in Kennewick, and you can bet the students and teachers at Cottonwood Elementary are excited about their first day in a brand new school. KEPR-TV got a sneak peek tour inside the building last week. If you missed it, here’s the video. In a nutshell: Schools sure have changed a lot since I was a kid!

Kamiakin HS on Newsweek’s Top Schools List (again)

This is getting redundant, isn’t it? Kamiakin High School is, once again, on Newsweek magazine’s list of the Best High Schools in America. Congrats! This is Kamiakin’s fourth consecutive year to make the list.

This year Kamiakin ranks at #1,058 overall, on a list of 1,600 schools. Just by being included, Kamiakin can say that it’s among the top six percent of high schools in the U.S. It’s also listed as the 17th-best high school in Washington; you can see the full list of Washington honorees here.

Newsweek’s rankings are based on stats related to how many advanced placement tests are taken by students, as well as how many students graduate each year.

Kindergarten Registration Schedule for Kennewick Schools

Cari and I know well what it’s like to send kids off to kindergarten — a little bit scary and a little bit exciting. Whether you’re ready or not, it’s time to register your youngsters for kindergarten in the 2010-2011 school year. Here are the pertinent dates and times for all of the Kennewick schools:

Amistad: register May 12th from 1 to 3 pm
Canyon View: register April 28th from 2 to 3:30 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Cascade: register May 5th from 1 to 3 pm (registration packets can be picked up on April 26)
Cottonwood: register May 12th from 2 to 3:30 pm at Southgate Elementary (registration packets can be picked up May 3rd)
Eastgate: register April 21st from 12:30 to 3:30 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Edison: register May 12th from 2:30 to 3:30 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Hawthorne: register May 12th from 2:30 to 3:30 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Lincoln: register May 5th from 2:30 to 4 pm (registration packets can be picked up May 3rd)
Ridge View: register April 28th from 1:30 to 3 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Southgate: registration was April 14th … sorry we missed this one
Sunset View: register April 28th from 12:30 to 2:30 pm (registration packets can be picked up now)
Vista: register May 5th from 2:30 to 4 pm
Washington: registration was March 24th … sorry we missed this one
Westgate: register May 5th from 2:30 to 3:30 pm

KSD Posts New Elementary School Boundaries

With Cottonwood Elementary School set to open in the fall, the Kennewick School District recently approved a new set of elementary school boundaries. We’ve had a request in to get a copy of the new boundaries, and KSD’s Lorraine Cooper graciously sent us this PDF to share with readers.

Lorraine admits it’s a bit difficult to read, but you should be able to zoom in on the PDF and see what you need to. If we get a higher-quality version of the elementary school boundary maps, we’ll update this post (or maybe make a whole new post).

Help Name KSD’s New Elementary School

The Kennewick School District is looking for some help in coming up with a name for the new elementary school that will open next year near Badger Canyon. There’s a committee of parents and district staff that’s gathering ideas and will choose three finalists.

Submit your idea via email to Lorraine Cooper at lorraine.cooper@ksd.org, and be sure to explain in a short paragraph or two why you’re recommending the name. You’ve got until December 4 to share your idea(s), and the top three will be announced around December 8th for voting.

Now, I know you’re tempted to suggest Matt McGee Elementary (as am I), but that’s probably not gonna fly. If you read KSD’s school naming policy (PDF), you’ll discover this:

“New district buildings shall be named after persons who have attained national or local prominence in the fields of education, arts and sciences, politics, military achievements and statesmanship, or other notable accomplishments; after past U.S. Presidents or Washington national senators or representatives; after the geographical characteristics of the area in which the facility is located, or after other important events or achievements.”

See? I’ve actually attained national prominence in my field, and international prominence in my hobby, but not in the “fields” listed above. So, I’m out. (sigh) Just go with your second choice and email it by December 4th.

Entire Kennewick School District is on Twitter

This is pretty cool. The entire Kennewick School District is on Twitter. And by “entire,” I mean the district itself and every one of its schools. It’s cool because Twitter is a great, great way to get news and information from sources you want to “follow.”

Now, some of the schools are slow in starting to use Twitter appropriately, but here’s a screenshot of the Washington Elementary account — they’re using it exactly as it should be used:

How great is that? The school is sending out quick updates to parents and other interested persons. Hopefully all the schools will follow Washington’s lead and turn their Twitter accounts into something beneficial for the parents and community.

KSD Hosting School Tour on October 29

Kennewick School District is inviting any interested community members to join their first KSD Bus Tour, which is scheduled for October 29:

The first KSD Bus Tour visits Kennewick High School and Westgate Elementary on Thursday, October 29. This is a great opportunity to see education as it happens in our classrooms. The tour is free and includes transportation to the schools, a light breakfast, and lunch. Register by calling 222-5001 by October 27. Anyone interested in learning more about the district and our schools is welcome to attend!

Newsweek Puts Kamiakin on Top 1500 High Schools List

Way to go Braves! For three straight years now, Newsweek magazine has put Kamiakin High School on its list of the top 1,500 high schools in the U.S. The Braves are ranked #998 this year — very cool!

Here’s how Newsweek describes the ranking system:

Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way.

Kennewick School Bond, Take 2: May 19 Election Date

After coming with one percent of having their school bond measure passed earlier this month, the Kennewick School District has voted to put the matter back in front of voters. And the next try at getting the bond passed will happen on May 19th.

KSD has posted this statement on their web site:

The bond amount and projects included have not changed. The bond measure received 59.3% approval in the last election, just shy of the 60% required to pass. However, less than 50% of the registered voters who received ballots returned them. The district hopes to engage more voters in the process in the May election. Your vote counts.

So, expect a PR blitz in the next couple months. The district will have to move quickly — ballots will start to arrive in mailboxes in late April, essentially one month from now.

If you’re not familiar with the bond measure, you can read the information site that KSD has put together. There’s an email address listed there if you have specific questions, too.
