Busy Day at Kennewick’s Slurpee Capital
Jul 11, 2009 Kennewick Business
Never in my life have I seen more bodies crammed into a convenience store. This photo is just a portion of the crowd at the 7-11 store in Kennewick at about 4:00 this afternoon.

Today, of course, was July 11 — 7/11 — and stores everywhere celebrated with free 7.11 oz. Slurpees. On a nearly 100-degree day, who are we to pass up an offer like that? (BTW, try the banana-flavored Slurpee if you can. Really good. That was my freebie. I also bought a bigger Coca-Cola-flavored Slurpee, too. Yummer-yumm.)
The Kennewick was proudly displaying a banner outside in honor of its status as the number one Slurpee-selling store in the world. There’s been some debate about this (see the comments in our old blog post, for example) because the fine folks in Winnipeg also lay claim to being the Slurpee capital of the world. As it turns out, this article from the Winnipeg Free Press a couple days ago explains it nicely:
- Winnipeg sells the most Slurpee cups per store, and they’ve had that distinction for 10 years now.
- The Kennewick 7-11 sells more Slurpees per day than any store in the world.
So, really, both Winnipeg and Kennewick can lay claim to being the Slurpee Capital of the World. It’s all about how you measure it.
