Bergeson, Dorn to Speak in Kennewick
The race for State Superintendent of Education is one that a lot of local folks are watching carefully. It’s almost become a referendum on the WASL itself, which a lot of parents (me included) in the Tri-Cities think should be thrown out … and it may be that the only way to do that is to first throw out incumbent Terry Bergeson.
She and challenger Randy Dorn will be discussing the WASL, and other topics, at the Kennewick Red Lion next week. The TC Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting, and it happens from Noon to 1:30 pm on September 30. The $15 cost includes lunch, and you’ll need to RSVP to 736-0510.
Dorn, for the record, opposes the WASL:
We need to replace the WASL with a better, fairer system of standards and tests.
Here’s his full statement on the WASL.

The WASL doesn’t need to be thrown out. The NCLB needs to be revamped, and Bergeson has a plan to do so. The NCLB act makes the WASL outcomes very punitive and punishes schools for not meeting standards. The NCLB act makes it so kids have to be tested every year, rather than 3 times over the course of their time spent in school. The NCLB act is what requires special-needs kids to pass the WASL just like other kids, and then holds it against schoolls when they don’t pass. Bergeson is the only one with enough knowledge of our education system to fix the damage George Bush has done to our schools.
