Another great weekend of hydroplane racing is in the books, with Steve David and the Oh, Boy, Oberto winning the title. But the thing that everybody will be talking about is J. Michael Kelly’s flip this afternoon during the Columbia Cup heats. Have a look at this:

That’s a one-and-a-half flip in mid-air, and Kelly was okay. Amazing.

Smell the flowers…

...smell it...

Found this nice, little flower display a few days ago outside the Windermere Real Estate office on Kellogg Street while going in to say hello to Cari. Looked nice, smelled even better. :)

Kennewick Man bones still in storage

SeattlePI.com ran an interesting update yesterday on those famous Kennewick Man bones that were found along the Columbia River back in 1996. Even after all the legal wrangling, it’s been a long time since scientists started studying the bones — and still we have no findings published.

Someday, several scientific, peer-reviewed articles are expected to be published as an anthology to outline the conclusions of three examinations made in 2004, 2005, and 2006 at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum, where Kennewick Man’s bones are stored.

But a specific publication has not been selected for the articles. And the scientists are unsure how long it will take until their findings are published, said Brian Irely, spokesman for the Smithsonian Institute.

A Smithsonian anthropologist, Douglas Owsley, is leading the studies. He was not available for comment.

“It’s odd to me that there hasn’t been any preliminary results out,” said Stephanie Jolivette, the museum’s public outreach coordinator.

Irely said the scientists, including Owsley, are juggling several projects, accounting for the delay in their findings being published.

When the courts ruled that the scientific studies could go on, they set no deadline for the scientists to complete their work and publish their findings. The article compares the Kennewick Man situation with a similar discovery in Alaska, also in 1996. Those studies have long since been completed, the findings published, and last year, the discovered bones were even reburied at the same place they were found.

The whole piece is interesting — click here to read it for yourself.

Here’s a quick look at some of the latest Kennewick business news we’ve heard.

  • Cupcakes Bakery and Deli is now open at 308 W. Kennewick Avenue, and the entire McGee family gives the cupcakes two thumbs up. (Is that 8 thumbs up, then?) We had the Red Velvet and (I think) Vanilla cupcakes not too long ago, and they were goooood!

Busy Day at Kennewick’s Slurpee Capital

Never in my life have I seen more bodies crammed into a convenience store. This photo is just a portion of the crowd at the 7-11 store in Kennewick at about 4:00 this afternoon.

Kennewick 7-11

Today, of course, was July 11 — 7/11 — and stores everywhere celebrated with free 7.11 oz. Slurpees. On a nearly 100-degree day, who are we to pass up an offer like that? (BTW, try the banana-flavored Slurpee if you can. Really good. That was my freebie. I also bought a bigger Coca-Cola-flavored Slurpee, too. Yummer-yumm.)

The Kennewick was proudly displaying a banner outside in honor of its status as the number one Slurpee-selling store in the world. There’s been some debate about this (see the comments in our old blog post, for example) because the fine folks in Winnipeg also lay claim to being the Slurpee capital of the world. As it turns out, this article from the Winnipeg Free Press a couple days ago explains it nicely:

  • Winnipeg sells the most Slurpee cups per store, and they’ve had that distinction for 10 years now.
  • The Kennewick 7-11 sells more Slurpees per day than any store in the world.

So, really, both Winnipeg and Kennewick can lay claim to being the Slurpee Capital of the World. It’s all about how you measure it.
