Major Blue Bridge Construction Starts Monday

Kennewick News, where:99336 | Comments (0) Matt McGee May 30, 2009 @ 8:39 pm

Starts Monday and lasts for three weeks. Yikes.

It all begins at 4:00 am Monday and will last until June 22nd. The construction crews will be building the two roundabouts that’ll replace the current on- and off-ramps. Check out the list of what will be closed between June 1 and June 22:

-SR 240 eastbound off-ramp to Columbia Drive
-Columbia Drive on-ramp to SR 240 westbound
-Columbia Drive on-ramp to southbound US 395
-US 395 northbound off-ramp to westbound SR 240
-US 395 southbound off-ramp to Columbia Drive

Those should re-open at 5:30 am on June 22. Seems to me like the whole blue bridge area is best avoided until this construction is finished.

Here’s the latest we’ve heard on what’s going on with the Kennewick business community.

  • International Futon & Furniture Co. is going out of business. They’ve been open for 20 years.
  • Rafael’s Taco House, which first opened in 1973 and then closed and re-opened a couple times since then, is now open again at 2632 W Kennewick Avenue. The owners say they’re still using the same recipes that patrons loved all along.
  • GESA Credit Union recently had a groundbreaking for its newest branch location on the corner of 27th Avenue and Union Street. The branch should be open this fall.

Kennewick Schools Bond Measure Has Passed

Kennewick News, where:99336 | Comments (0) Matt McGee May 20, 2009 @ 3:37 pm

If I’m reading the Benton County Election Results page correctly, the Kennewick School District bond measure has passed!

That page, which was updated about two hours ago, shows that the measure currently has a 61.58% “YES” vote. (A 60% approval is required to pass.) It says there are still 150 ballots still to be counted, but according to my math, even if all 150 of those are NO votes, the YES votes still amount to 61.06% of the total.

So it seems to me that the bond measure has passed! Or am I misreading that page?

UPDATE: I emailed Stuart Holmes, the county’s Election Supervisor, to see if I’m reading those numbers correctly, and here’s his reply:

“We will be certifying the May Special Election results on June 3rd. Ballots that are returned to our office with a valid postmark or are a registered Military/Overseas voter can still be counted. The number of valid postmarks and/or Military/Overseas voters will be fairly small but nothing is official until it has been certified by the Canvassing Board.”

Chrysler Shutting Down Leskovar Lincoln-Mercury

Kennewick Business, where:99336 | Comments (0) Matt McGee May 14, 2009 @ 1:29 pm

The Leskovar Lincoln-Mercury dealership on Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick will be shut down. It’s part of Chrysler’s restructuring plan that was made mandatory when the company accepted $4 billion in federal bailout loans.

Ouch. Not good when the national economic problems hit our area in such an obvious way.

Seattle’s KCPQ has a full list of dealerships in Washington that are being shut down.
